Beyond the Label: An Educational Kit to Promote Awareness and Understanding of the Impact of Stigma on People Living with Concurrent Mental Health and Substance Use Problems

Resource Type

Beyond the Label is an educational kit evolved from research in the fields of stigma and concurrent disorders, and through the knowledge obtained from people living with concurrent disorders, their families and the professionals working closely with them. These studies and conversations have uncovered one clear that despite the increased awareness about concurrent disorders, their prevalence, and the need for an integrated approach to treatment, the stigma attached to the label continues to be a significant barrier for people living with these problems. This often-unconscious stigma prevents people from seeking assistance, accessing services or, in many cases, continuing with the treatment. Beyond the Label  developed by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health helps service providers ensure their services are accessible and supportive to people with concurrent mental health and substance use problems by examining stigma and the barrier it presents, It also provides mental health and substance use treatment professionals with concrete tools to use in their agencies and in the community, to raise awareness about the stigma associated with concurrent disorders.
