The SAMHSA Opioid Overdose Prevention Toolkit includes Opioid Use Disorder Facts, Five Essential Steps for First Responders, Information for Prescribers, Safety Advice for Patients and Family Members, and Recovering for Opioid Overdose. Also, provided are strategies to prevent overdose deaths. Strategies include 1.) Encourage providers, persons persons at high risk, family members, and others to learn how to prevent and manage opioid overdose. 2.) Ensure access to treatment for individuals who are misusing opioids or who have a substance use disorder. 3.) Ensure ready access to naloxone. 4.) Ensure ready access to naloxone. 5.) Encourage prescribers to use state prescription drug  monitoring programs (PDMPs). Each of these five strategies has in-depth steps and resources to support implementation. Information for Prescribers, including specific resources are provided in this toolkit. Safety advice for parents and family members is reviewed including chapters on the following topics: What are Opioids? Preventing Overdose, If You Suspect an Overdose, What is Naloxone? Naloxone Storage, and How to Avoid Opioid Overdose. In addition, this toolkit identifies the five essential steps for First Responders. There is a separte toolkit available from the SAMHSA Store and is featured on this website for First Responders. Additionally, resources for communities are providedin this toolkit to support local communities and organizations.
